The Louise Brooks Memorial Raffle Central Arizona
December 5, 2009 at this years Installation Event in Gilbert
Who was Louise Brooks? Louise volunteered at the University of
Arizona and became an employee in 1977. With her dry sense of humor Louise was
always fun to be around and made holidays and birthdays special for everyone.
Louise was a founding member of the Arizona AALAS branch and received both the
Technician of the Year & Member of the Year awards for her dedication. Louise loved
children and she came up with the idea of a yearly raffle with proceeds going to
the children for toys and games for the Child Life Activity Center. The raffle
was named for her after her untimely death in 1996 from complications caused by
Lupus. The Arizona branch proudly has carried on the raffle in her honor.
"Special Olympics Arizona...Let me win, but if I cannot let me be brave in the attempt."
This is the Special Olympic oath, which the special Olympians recite before each
competition. Children and adults with mental retardation have embodied this
saying for over 30 years as they participate in year round sports training and
athletic competitions.

Special
Olympics is a year-round program offering a lifetime of learning
through sports. Special Olympics believes that every person should have the
opportunity to participate in sports training and competition. Its goal is
to ensure that every person with mental retardation, eight years of age or
older, is given that chance. Phoenix Special Olympics, Maricopa Area, offers
a wide variety of programs in more than a dozen Olympic sports so athletes
may choose those most suited to their interests and abilities. It's one of
the largest area programs in the nation! |
 |
State level events combined with area and local games offer opportunities in
22 Olympic style competitions and the chance to experience courage, skill,
sharing and joy. These state level events include Winter Games, Basketball
and Cheerleading, Summer Games, Softball and Bocce, Fall Championships, and
Holiday Classic. There are also opportunities to go to National and
International competitions. Special Olympics transcends boundaries of
geography, nationality, political philosophy, gender, age, race and
religion.
Please help Arizona AALAS by supporting our
raffle. All proceeds go
to Special Olympics Arizona.
